Gametogenesis
Gametogenesis is the process by which individual reproductive cells called gametes are formed in organisms that reproduce sexually. It is a crucial step during sexual reproduction as it creates the sperm and egg cells that will eventually fuse to create the zygote. During gametogenesis, the number of chromosomes in the gametes is halved from the normal diploid number in the parent organisms, which is an important part of the process of sexual reproduction. Gametogenesis occurs in male and female reproductive systems and is necessary for normal reproduction. It is also a fundamental part of genetic diversity, as the gametes recombine genetic material to form a new, unique individual.
