Elaioplasts

Elaioplasts are specialised organelles that store fat droplets, particularly in plant cells. They are typically found in the cytoplasm near the nucleus and are usually spherical in shape. They are important for providing energy reserves, as well as providing support, a structural role and protection. Elaioplasts are essential in seed germination and allow plants to survive periods of drought or nutrient deficiency. They also play a role in the ripening of fruit, by contributing to the flavour, texture and aroma. Elaioplasts are affected by environmental stress, but they also act as a metabolism regulator and are essential for the survival and growth of plants.
