Plasmalemma

The plasmalemma is a thin, selectively permeable membrane that surrounds the cytoplasm of cells. It helps to maintain the balance of water and electrolyte concentrations within the cell, and is involved in the regulation of cell volume, as well as providing a barrier between the cell and its environment. The plasmalemma is also important in the transport of molecules into and out of the cell, and the communication between cells. As such, it is essential for normal cellular functioning and for the maintenance of physiological processes.
