Root Hairs

Root hairs are cellular extensions of the epidermal cells of a plant's root. They are single-cell-thick and can be up to 2 mm long. Root hairs are laden with an aperture at the tip, and can be found along the entire length of the root. Root hairs play an important role in the efficient absorption of water and essential minerals from the soil by increasing the surface area for absorption. They also form channels for entry of oxygen into the root and are primary sites of photosynthesis. In addition to this, root hairs also help in anchoring and stabilizing the root system. As a result, root hairs are essential for the health and growth of a plant.
