Crop Epigenetics
Crop epigenetics is the study of how environmental factors influence gene expression in crops, without changing their genetic sequence. By focusing on how external triggers affect the way genes are turned on or off in crops, epigenetics is helping to improve crop resistance to disease, stress, and pests, as well as boost crop yields. Through epigenetics, we can identify the precise combinations of environmental triggers that result in the most favorable phenotypes for the crops – for example, bigger fruit or more nutritious produce. This knowledge can be used to create disease-resistant, high-yielding varieties of crops that are adapted for particular climates, soil types, and conditions. By understanding crop epigenetics, it’s possible to increase food security and ensure a secure and sustainable food supply.
