Fundamentals of Public Health Series
Preventive medicine and care are two crucial aspects of public health that aim to maintain and improve the health of individuals and populations by preventing the occurrence or the progression of diseases. Preventive medicine and care are not only cost-effective but also a more ethical approach to healthcare as compared to treatment-oriented interventions. Preventive medicine emphasizes on the promotion of healthy behaviors and lifestyle changes to prevent the onset of diseases. Primary prevention strategies include immunizations, health education, and promotion of physical activity and good nutrition. Health education campaigns, for instance, aim to educate people on the importance of reducing risk factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and sedentary lifestyles. The focus on primary prevention offers the best opportunity for achieving and maintaining the best possible health outcomes. On the other hand, preventive care refers to medical care offered to individuals who do not have symptoms of a particular health problem. It includes screening tests, physical check-ups, and counseling services aimed at detecting potential health problems before they become severe. Preventive care also includes management of risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. Such interventions can prevent the development and advancement of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. Preventive medicine and care not only improve the health outcomes of individuals but also advance the public health agenda by reducing the incidence of preventable diseases. Furthermore, preventive medicine and care contribute significantly to health equity by reducing health disparities among individuals and communities. The promotion and provision of preventive medicine and care services are, therefore, instrumental in achieving universal health coverage, a cornerstone of the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
