Overview

Cervical cancer is a malignancy of the cervix, the lower portion of the uterus, caused in most cases by persistent infection with high-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). It is a leading cancer among women, and prevention through HPV vaccination and screening, together with early diagnosis and treatment, is central to reducing its burden. Radiation and Nuclear Medicine play an important role in the treatment of cervical cancer, particularly through radiotherapy and brachytherapy, in which radiation sources are placed near or within the tumor to deliver targeted doses while sparing surrounding tissue. Treatment planning increasingly draws on imaging-based approaches, and comparative evaluation of techniques helps optimize outcomes and survival. Research relevant to this journal includes a comparative survival assessment of two-dimensional versus three-dimensional brachytherapy for cervical cancer, alongside broader work on the prevention, screening, and biology of the disease. Related studies examine the uptake and determinants of cervical screening across populations in Ethiopia, Nigeria, Uganda, and elsewhere, the role of HPV in virus-induced carcinogenesis, molecular features such as the PI3K/mTOR/AKT pathway, the assessment of cervical lesions using markers including p16/INK4a and Ki-67, and complementary and natural treatment approaches, reflecting the diagnostic, therapeutic, and radiotherapeutic dimensions of cervical cancer care.
