Overview

Imaging techniques are the methods used to produce visual representations of the interior of the body for diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment guidance. They encompass modalities such as plain radiography (X-ray), ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and nuclear and optical methods, each exploiting different physical principles to depict organs, tissues, and pathological changes without surgery. The choice of technique depends on the clinical question, the tissue of interest, and considerations of resolution, contrast, and radiation exposure. The peer-reviewed research collected here spans several imaging approaches relevant to Radiation and Nuclear Medicine. Studies include an evaluation of tissue optical clearing for improved diagnosis, a comparison of cone-beam computed tomography with orthopantomography in sinus augmentation, and the use of echo-planar diffusion-weighted MRI in diagnosing cholesteatoma. Further work examines the toxicity of iodinated radiographic contrast agents used in routine practice, the application of magnetic resonance biospectroscopy in metabolic and molecular imaging of cancer, and emerging immunoassay and immunogenomic approaches to disease monitoring. Together these open-access articles illustrate the technical development, diagnostic application, and safety considerations of medical imaging across radiographic, cross-sectional, and molecular modalities.
