Overview
Radiation exposure is the absorption of energy from radiation sources such as X-rays, gamma rays, radiofrequency fields, and ultraviolet light. Exposure may be natural or man-made and can occur in medical, occupational, environmental, or accidental settings. Because high or prolonged doses of ionizing radiation can damage cells and raise long-term health risks, exposure is carefully measured and limited, while controlled doses are used deliberately in diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy. Quantifying and minimizing dose, especially for vulnerable groups, is central to radiation protection. Research published by OpenAccessPub journals addresses several aspects of this topic. Studies report entrance surface dose measurements during pediatric chest X-rays, examine household radiation exposure and safety after ambulatory radioiodine ablation therapy, and review the biological effects of high radiofrequency radiation in animal models. Further work considers the use of electron beams and gamma radiation to attenuate environmental toxins and the effects of laser irradiation on tissue, broadening the range of radiation types covered. Together these peer-reviewed, open-access papers gather evidence relevant to the measurement, biological effects, and safe management of radiation exposure across medical and environmental contexts.
