Radiation exposure is the absorption of energy from radiation sources such as X-rays, gamma rays, radiofrequency fields, and ultraviolet light. Exposure may be natural or man-made and can occur in medical, occupational, environmental, or accidental settings. Because high or prolonged doses of ionizing radiation can damage cells and raise long-term health risks, exposure is carefully measured and limited, while controlled doses are used deliberately in diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy.
