Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection is a highly contagious virus that affects the respiratory system. It is one of the most common causes of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in children and can also cause serious illnesses in adults. RSV is the leading cause of hospitalizations in young children in the US and can cause life-threatening complications in the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Treatment of RSV infection focuses on supportive measures to reduce symptoms, such as fever control and hydration. Prevention of RSV infection includes washing hands, avoiding contact with people who have the virus, and getting a yearly flu vaccine. RSV is an important cause of disease around the world and a significant health concern that needs to be addressed.
