Sphingomonas
Sphingomonas is a genus of Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria. These bacteria are widespread in natural environments and are found in soils, sediments and aquatic environments. They are also found on the surfaces of plants and animals. Sphingomonas are able to utilize a wide variety of organic compounds as a source of energy, and they possess a unique set of metabolic capabilities. They have potential applications in bioremediation, biodegradation and biofuel production. They are also known to produce a variety of secondary metabolites which can have a range of applications in drug discovery, agriculture and food industry.
