Brief Psychotic Disorder
Brief Psychotic Disorder is a mental health disorder involving a sudden onset of psychosis, which is a set of symptoms characterized by detachment from reality and disconnect from the environment around them. Symptoms usually last for at least one day, but may extend for a few weeks. It is typically preceded by some type of stressful event, such as a traumatic or life-threatening experience, a sudden or substantial change in life circumstances, or mental illness medications that cause rapid changes in body chemistry. Treatment is typically geared towards alleviating the symptoms of the disorder and providing supportive services. It may include hospitalization, medications, psychotherapy, or a combination of these treatments. Brief Psychotic Disorder is important to recognize in order to provide early and effective intervention that can help people cope better with life's changes and decrease the potential for future episodes.
