Clozapine

Clozapine is an antipsychotic medication used to treat certain symptoms of schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder such as hearing voices, having false beliefs (delusions) and unorganized thinking. Clozapine is used to reduce the risk of suicidal behavior in people with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, and it is generally more effective at controlling symptoms than other antipsychotics. Clozapine has also been shown to reduce hospitalizations and decrease the use of other psychiatric medications in the treatment of schizophrenia. In addition, it has been shown to have some beneficial effects on cognitive functioning in people with significant cognitive impairments due to schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a serious disorder which affects how a person thinks, feels and acts. Someone with schizophrenia may have difficulty distinguishing between what is real and what is imaginary; may be unresponsive or withdrawn; and may have difficulty expressing normal emotions in social situations. The cause of schizophrenia is still unclear.
