Electroconvulsive Therapy
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a medical treatment that involves sending electric currents through the brain to cause a seizure. It is used to treat severe mental illness and can be an effective way to treat depression, bipolar disorder, mania, schizophrenia, and catatonia. The seizures caused by ECT can help to restore a patient’s balance of hormones and neurotransmitters and can be especially useful for treating conditions that have been resistant to other treatments or for conditions for which medications have caused adverse side effects. After the treatment, most patients experience short-term memory loss, which typically resolves over time. Although ECT is still a controversial treatment, it can provide important and meaningful relief to people who have not found relief with other treatments.
