Desmin
Desmin is a protein found in muscle cells. It acts as a scaffolding component in the Z disc and supports the attachment of actin filaments. Desmin stabilizes the muscle fiber, connecting the sarcomeres and facilitating the contraction of the muscle. Desmin also binds to other proteins and plays a role in the breakdown and balancing of calcium ions. Desmin is important for muscle structure and function and its loss can result in abnormal muscle functioning and diseases. Desmin-related myopathies are an inherited form of muscular dystrophy that can affect skeletal and smooth muscles. There is currently no cure for desmin-related myopathies, but research has identified potential therapeutic targets.
