Laminectomy

A laminectomy is a surgical procedure used to relieve pressure on the spine caused by spinal stenosis and herniated discs. This process involves removing a portion of the vertebral lamina (the bone that covers the spinal canal) in order to provide relief from the bone compressing the nerves. A laminectomy can help to reduce or prevent radiating pain, numbness, and weakness that is often experienced in the arms and/or legs. It can also improve function, flexibility and enhance quality of life. Depending on the individual and the severity of the condition, a laminectomy can be performed as either a minimally invasive or open procedure.
