Osteogenesis Imperfecta

Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder that affects a person’s bones. The disorder causes bones to be fragile and break easily, usually due to genetic mutations in the genes that control the production of collagen, the main structural protein in bones. This disorder can result in easily broken bones, stunted growth, and a distinctive facial appearance. People with OI may also experience hearing loss, respiratory problems, and joint pain. With early diagnosis and proper medical treatment, however, it is possible to manage the symptoms and improve the quality of life of those affected. OI can also be managed with therapies such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and medications to strengthen bones. Osteogenesis Imperfecta is an important disorder to be aware of and can be managed with the help of a doctor and other medical professionals.
