Bile Canaliculus

The bile canaliculus is a microscopic tubular passageway, present in the liver, which transports bile throughout the body. Bile is an important digestive fluid that helps to break down dietary fats and allows for their absorption. The bile canaliculus is a significant part of the liver's bile duct system and is responsible for the production and release of bile into the small intestine. Bile canaliculi are also involved in the regulation of bile salts and other metabolic processes. Dysfunction of the bile canaliculi may lead to liver and gallbladder disorders, such as gallstones, liver cirrhosis and biliary obstruction. Treatment of these disorders may involve medical and surgical interventions, as well as supplementation.
