Digestion
Digestion is the process of breaking down food into its smallest components to make them available for absorption and use by the body. It is an essential process for life and health, as it enables the body to use the energy, proteins, vitamins, and minerals from food to function and grow. Digestion begins in the mouth, then progresses through the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. A number of organs, such as the liver and pancreas, also contribute their secretions to the digestive process. The products of digestion are absorbed into the bloodstream and distributed to cells throughout the body.
