the Biliary System: Anatomy and Functions
The biliary system, part of the digestive system, is composed of the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts. It is responsible for the production, storage and release of bile, a digestive fluid. Bile helps break down fat into smaller particles and aids the absorption of their nutrients. It also eliminates toxins and waste products from the body, which helps keep us healthy. The biliary system plays an important role in digestion, allowing us to absorb essential minerals, vitamins and water. Additionally, it helps neutralize stomach acids and promotes growth and healing of the intestinal lining. Dysfunction within the biliary system may lead to symptoms such as jaundice, abdominal pain and nausea. Treatment ranges from lifestyle modification to medical and surgical interventions.
