Cretinism

Cretinism is a rare condition resulting from iodine deficiency during fetal development. It is characterized by stunted physical and mental growth. Symptoms can include deafness, mental retardation, and developmental delays in motor skills and speech. It can also cause goiter, skeletal deformities, and physical abnormalities. Cretinism can be prevented with timely and sufficient iodine intake, and treated with hormonal replacement therapy. The most affected population is in areas with naturally-occurring iodine deficiency, particularly mountainous regions and some coastal areas. Treatment and prevention are essential to reduce the severity of the condition and ensure the well-being of affected individuals.

Most nodules are cysts filled with fluid or with a stored form of thyroid hormone called colloid. Solid nodules have little fluid or colloid. These nodules are more likely to be cancerous than are fluid-filled nodules. Some types of solid nodules, such as hyperplastic nodules and adenomas, have too many cells, but the cells are not cancer cells.
