Bejel
Bejel, also known as endemic syphilis, is a chronic infectious disease caused by Treponema pallidum subspecies endemicum. It is characterized by skin and mucous membrane lesions, as well as systemic and neurologic symptoms. Bejel occurs more commonly in desert and steppe regions and is spread mainly through contact with infectious lesions, saliva, and skin-to-skin contact. Bejel can be effectively treated with antibiotics, such as penicillin, and should be diagnosed, managed, and treated as early as possible to prevent further spread and complications, including birth defects and stillbirths. Bejel is a serious public health problem, as it is associated with poor outcomes for mothers and babies, as well as decreased educational and social opportunities for those affected. It is important to spread awareness of the disease and to work towards early diagnosis and treatment in order to decrease its impact on public health.
