Meristematic Cells
Meristematic cells are undifferentiated, rapidly dividing cells found in plant tissue. They are important because they are the site of new cell production and contribute to growth, regeneration and formation of organs. Meristematic cells are an integral part of the plants’ life cycle and it has been found that they can be used for genetic engineering of plants, so that desired characteristics can be developed. This is an invaluable tool in maintaining and improving crop yields as well as developing new plants for ornamental and medicinal use.
