Pleurae

The pleurae are two thin membranes (also known as pleural layers) that line and protect the lungs and the chest wall. Through their elasticity, the pleurae allow for the expansion of the lungs when breathing and provide a lubricated surface for the lungs to move smoothly against the chest wall. This movement helps to avoid any friction damage between the two surfaces. In addition, the pleurae provide a barrier, preventing any foreign particles from entering the body via the lungs and chest wall. Their importance in breathing is essential, as inflammation or diseases in the area can cause painful breathing, coughing and other symptoms. Treatment for these conditions can vary, with antibiotics and surgery being common, depending on the severity.
