Captive Animals

Captive animals are animals that are held in human care, usually for the purpose of entertainment or research. These animals may be kept in zoos, aquariums, amusement parks, pet stores, private homes, or on farms. Captive animals play an important role in conservation, providing insight into species behavior and habitat requirements, teaching people about the natural world, and increasing public awareness and interest in wildlife. In addition, some captive animals may serve as sources of food, fur, or other products. Captive animal studies include animal behavior, nutrition, reproduction, disease prevention, genetic improvement, and animal-assisted therapy.
