Monotremes
Monotremes are a unique order of egg-laying mammals found only in Australia and New Guinea. They are the only mammals to lay eggs, and are distinguished from other mammalian groups by their unique combination of features, including a cloaca, an egg-laying reproductive system, and the presence of electroreceptors. Monotremes are important for their role in helping us understand the evolution of other mammals and are of great interest due to their bizarre morphology and physiology. They are also popular with the public due to their unusual traits, and are commonly kept in zoological collections. Monotremes have the potential to provide a wide range of benefits to human health, including disease-modeling, drug-discovery, and bioprospecting of new compounds. Furthermore, monotremes and their associated ecosystems are important for conservation efforts and are key species in maintaining biodiversity in many parts of Australia and New Guinea.
