Strongylocentrotus
droebachiensis Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis, commonly known as the green sea urchin, is a species of sea urchin found in the Northern Atlantic Ocean, from Labrador to North Carolina. It is among the most important species in the marine ecosystem, as it helps to keep the population of its predators in check, ensuring the health of its habitat. Green sea urchins also help maintain a balanced environment by consuming kelp, which in turn prevents overgrowth of algae – a process known as “grazing”. Additionally, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis plays an important role in the economy, as it is harvested for its roe, which is a delicacy in many parts of the world. It is also a popular aquarium species, due to its relatively hardy nature.
