Vibrissae
Vibrissae are specialized and highly sensitive tactile organs found in many mammals. They are commonly referred to as “whiskers”, and may be found on the snout, face, chin, or even on the elbows, knees, and ankles. Vibrissae are made of stiff hairs with sensory organs at the base and connected to the central nervous system. They enable animals to detect and interpret changes in airflows, air pressure, and minute vibrations in their environment. This can help them to detect and effectively respond to objects, predators, prey, and their own kind. Vibrissae are an important sensory tool for animals and aid in their survival and navigation skills.
