Biography:

  • A Washington DC-based writer, organizer, and women's health activist, Anna Forbes has worked in HIV/AIDS continuously since 1985.
  • Initially focused on domestic service delivery, policy, and advocacy, she broadened her scope in the 1990s to address women's HIV prevention needs globally.
  • She participated in founding of the Global Campaign for Microbicides in 1998 and resigned from her position there as Deputy Director in 2010.
  • During her tenure, GCM successfully generated political demand in Asia, Africa, North America, and Europe for increased microbicide research and development.
  • Anna led their initiatives to assure inclusion of key constituencies in this advocacy -- particularly sex workers, HIV positive women and men who have sex with men. 
  • After serving on the UNAIDS-led Global Coalition on Women and AIDS- Steering Committee from its inception until 2010, Anna now counts GCWA among her clients.
  • Her international client list also includes GNP+, Global Network of Sex Work Projects, IAVI, the National Association of People with AIDS (U.S.), Universal Access to Female Condoms (a joint programme of Oxfam Novib.
  • Rutgers/World Population Foundation, i+solutions and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and the Open Society Foundation. 
  • She is 2012 recipient of the Omololu Falobi Award for Excellence in HIV Prevention Research Community Advocacy, as well as other awards and honors
  • Anna has published widely on women's health and HIV/AIDS in the popular press, academic journals and grey literature.
  • She has contributed to NAM's most recent edition of Preventing AIDS, multiple editions of Our Bodies Ourselves, and is the author of eight children's books on HIV/AIDS.
