Astrocytoma

Astrocytomas are a type of brain tumour that arise from astrocytes – star-shaped cells that make up the supportive tissue of the central nervous system. Astrocytomas can range from low-grade, non-cancerous tumours to high-grade, aggressive cancerous tumours that spread quickly throughout the brain and spine. Depending on the stage and grade of the tumour, treatment may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of these approaches. Astrocytomas can be life-threatening and carry a risk of recurrent tumours; however, early detection and proper treatment can improve prognosis.
