Maternal Inheritance

Maternal Inheritance is the transmission of genetic information from mother to offspring, or in simpler terms, the genetic traits of the mother are passed onto her offspring. Most living organisms have evolved to transfer a proportion of their genetic information through maternal inheritance. It is also a key factor in evolution and is used in the study of both genetics and development. Apart from providing genetic material to the offspring, maternal inheritance is also important for ensuring that vital environmental information is inherited by the offspring. In humans, the mitochondrial DNA, which is responsible for energy production in our cells, is passed down to us through the mother. Maternal Inheritance is of significant importance in both medical and evolutionary studies.
