Myxococcus

xanthus Myxococcus xanthus is a Gram-negative soil-dwelling bacterium belonging to the class of Proteobacteria. It is significant for its complex social behavior, such as predatory hunting for other bacteria, as well as its ability to aggregate into fruiting bodies. M. xanthus is used in scientific research as a model organism to study a variety of topics such as development, social behavior, stress responses, and environmental sensing. Its genome has been sequenced, allowing for further insights into its physiology and genetic mechanisms. The findings derived from its study are applicable to a range of environmental processes, including bacterial interactions, biofilm formation, and soil fertility.
