Trophoblasts

Trophoblasts are specialized cells that form the outer layer of the blastocyst during early embryonic development. They are instrumental to the formation and growth of the placenta and the development of the fetus in mammals. Trophoblasts not only create the physical connection between the mother and the fetus but also enable nutrient and oxygen exchange between them, as well as waste removal. Furthermore, trophoblasts are key to supporting the development of the fetal immune system, as they form bridges of communication between the mother's immune system and the evolving fetus. In addition, they are involved in signaling the mother to release hormones to nourish and protect the fetus during pregnancy. Without trophoblasts, successful pregnancies could not take place.
