Cytokines and Aging
Cytokines are a diverse family of small proteins that are released by the cells of the immune system, the endocrine system, and other tissues in response to stress or injury. They play a critical role in the aging process, as they are involved in the regulation of inflammation, apoptosis (programmed cell death), and the metabolism of glucose and lipids. As such, they can influence the development of age-related diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, and metabolic disorders. In recent years, scientists have been exploring how manipulating the levels and activity of cytokines can enable the prevention and treatment of age-related diseases, as well as other conditions. By understanding the role of cytokines in aging, we can not only better appreciate the aging process, but also potentially develop strategies to promote healthy aging and prolong life span.
