Nephrology
Nephrology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the kidneys. It is an important specialty of internal medicine that deals with the study of normal kidney function, kidney disorders and the treatment of kidney failure. The kidneys are responsible for filtering wastes and toxins from the body, controlling blood pressure, and regulating electrolyte levels. Commonly treated diseases and disorders in nephrology include chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease, renal artery stenosis, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, hypertension and electrolyte imbalances. Early diagnosis and treatment of kidney disease and its associated disorders can help prevent the progression of kidney failure and other serious, life-threatening complications.
