Orbital Abscess

An orbital abscess is a localized collection of pus within the bony cavity surrounding the eyeball, known as the orbit. This is a serious condition and if left untreated, can cause vision loss and even life-threatening complications. Orbital abscesses can have many causes, ranging from bacterial or fungal infections spread through the bloodstream to trauma, surgeries, dental infections, sinusitis, or cancer. Common symptoms include pain, redness, swelling, ocular or facial movements, decreased vision, nausea or vomiting. Treatment of an orbital abscess may involve antibiotics or antifungals, surgical drainage, and supportive care. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of an orbital abscess is important to prevent potentially serious long-term problems.
