Subperiosteal Orbital Abscess

A subperiosteal orbital abscess is an infection of the soft tissue of the eye socket, that accumulates underneath the periosteum, the thin membrane of connective tissue that covers the bones of the skull. Subperiosteal orbital abscesses are usually caused by bacterial, fungal, or viral infections, and can lead to symptoms such as redness of the eye, swelling of the eye socket and lid, and pain in and around the eye. Treatment for a subperiosteal orbital abscess usually involves antibiotic therapy and possible drainage of the abscess. If left untreated, a subperiosteal orbital abscess can cause permanent damage to the eye, vision loss, and can spread to other parts of the body, which can be life-threatening. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing these serious complications.
