Diseases, Buruli Ulcer
Buruli ulcer is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium ulcerans. It is a slowly progressing skin infection, typically found in tropical and subtropical regions, and is characterized by hardening of the skin, swelling, and the formation of ulcers. These ulcers can become deep and disfiguring if left untreated. Treatment involves a combination of antibiotics, surgery, and skin grafting to limit the damage to the skin and tissue. Prevention of Buruli ulcer includes good hygiene and avoiding contact with swampy and stagnant waters. Early diagnosis and treatment are important for minimizing the severity of the disease.
