Venous Ulcers
Venous ulcers are open wounds that occur mainly on the lower legs and feet due to a backup of blood in the veins of the lower legs. This accumulation of blood causes swelling, which weakens the skin and can lead to the breakdown of the skin tissue and the development of a skin ulcer. Venous ulcers are a long-term and reoccurring problem that can be quite painful and difficult to treat. With proper diagnosis and treatment, venous ulcers can be managed. Treatment typically involves a combination of self-care measures such as keeping the affected area clean and dry, avoiding standing for extended periods of time, and elevating the legs, as well as medical interventions such as topical medications, compression stocking to help reduce swelling, and antibiotics to treat any possible infection.
