Mycorrhiza
Mycorrhiza is a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and the roots of a plant. The fungus provides the plant with nutrients and in return the plant provides the fungus with energy-rich carbon compounds. Mycorrhiza is an essential component of healthy soils and without it, plant growth is severely limited. The fungi help in the absorption of nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen, while also helping in the retention of water and maintaining a healthy soil structure. Mycorrhiza can also help to protect the plant against certain diseases and help protect the environment by increasing carbon sequestration. Mycorrhiza has many practical applications in agriculture, ecology, forestry, and horticulture, including the promotion of healthy and productive soil, improved crop yields, better resistance to diseases and pests, and the promotion of carbon sequestration.
