Article types
Types and lengths
Word limits apply to the main text and exclude the title page, abstract, references, tables and figure legends.
Review Article
A scholarly review of a topic, setting out what is established and where the open questions lie.
5,000–7,000 words
Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Evidence synthesis conducted to a pre-specified protocol.
Methods Article
A study design, measure, instrument or analytical approach presented so that others can apply it.
Data/Resource Article
A dataset, cohort or research resource described so that others can use it.
Short Communication
Preliminary findings or focused studies.

Case Report
Instructive clinical case presentations.
2,000–3,000 words
A word limit for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis, Methods Article and Data/Resource Article is agreed with the editorial office before preparation. These seven formats are the routine submission categories. Editorial and Perspective/Commentary are published by invitation from the editors. Where the work you intend to submit sits outside these formats, write to the editorial office before preparing it and the editors will advise on the appropriate form.
Structure
How to set the manuscript out
Title page
Full title, all author names and affiliations, corresponding author contact details, word count and keywords.
Abstract
A structured abstract of 250–300 words under the headings Objective, Methods, Results and Conclusions.
Introduction
Background, rationale and a clear statement of the objectives or hypotheses.
Methods
Enough detail to allow replication: participants, measures, procedures and the analysis plan, with the ages and developmental stage of the sample stated explicitly.
Results
The findings with appropriate statistical reporting and clear visual displays.
Discussion
Interpretation, comparison with existing literature, limitations, and implications for practice where the design supports them.
Research with young participants
Ethics documentation the journal requires
Research involving young people must document the consent pathway approved for the study and its jurisdiction.
Ethics committee or institutional review board approval, identifying the approving committee and the protocol number.
For participants legally classified as minors for the study procedures: documented parental or guardian permission as required by the approved protocol and applicable law, with any approved waiver described.
Age-appropriate assent from minors able to understand the study, where required by the ethics approval.
For participants legally able to consent for themselves, including eligible 18- and 19-year-olds: documented informed consent under the approved protocol.
A description of the privacy and confidentiality protections applied to participant data.
Interventional clinical trials must be registered in an accepted public trial registry at or before the first participant provides consent for enrollment. The registry name, registration number, and registration date must be reported in the manuscript.
Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement.
Review and submission
Before you submit
All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal’s scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.
For double-blind review, remove author names, affiliations, acknowledgments, funding details, institution names, and other identifying information from the reviewer manuscript. Provide identifying information separately in the title-page file or submission form.

A manuscript reaches the journal through one of three approved routes. All three lead to the same editorial office and the same review.
