The rules under which manuscripts are assessed, published and corrected. Each statement below is the journal's operative wording.

Policies in force
Sections are listed in the order an author meets them: how a manuscript is reviewed, how it is decided, what it must carry, and what happens to the record afterward.
Peer review

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
Editorial decisions
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
Editorial decisions remain independent of fees, services, memberships, or roles.
Editors recuse themselves from decisions on their own submissions; those manuscripts are handled independently.
Double-blind handling
For double-blind review, remove author names, affiliations, acknowledgments, funding details, institution names, and other identifying information from the reviewer manuscript. Provide identifying information separately in the title-page file or submission form.
When double-blind review is requested, editors must ensure that author-identifying information is not shared with reviewers.
For double-blind manuscripts, reviewers must not attempt to identify the authors.
Research ethics and approvals
Studies involving human participants or animals must carry the approval of the responsible institutional committee, and the manuscript must say which body gave it. Informed consent is required where participants are identifiable.
Clinical-trial registration
Interventional clinical trials must be registered in an accepted public trial registry at or before the first participant provides consent for enrollment. The registry name, registration number, and registration date must be reported in the manuscript.
Data availability
Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement.
Authorship, contributions and competing interests
Every listed author must have contributed substantively to the work and agreed to the submitted version. Funding sources and competing interests are declared at submission, and contribution statements are published with the article.
Originality and similarity screening
Manuscripts are screened for overlap with the published literature. A similarity report is read in context by the handling editor; no fixed percentage decides an outcome.
Corrections, retractions and the version of record
Corrections and retractions are published as citable notices linked to the article they concern, and the original record remains available so the literature stays traceable.

Preservation and access
This journal’s content is committed to Portico, a not-for-profit digital-preservation archive run by ITHAKA (the organization behind JSTOR). As articles are deposited they enter Portico’s permanent archive, so the scholarly record stays available for the long term — even if a title one day ceases to publish.
Independence
Editorial judgment is the journal's responsibility and is not delegated to any commercial arrangement.
What decides an outcome
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
The assessment rests with the handling editor, informed by independent review.
What does not
Editorial decisions remain independent of fees, services, memberships, or roles.
Membership, article processing charges and optional author services are administered separately from the editorial process.
