Before you prepare the manuscript
Two questions are worth settling first, because they determine how the manuscript should be written.
Check the subject fit
The journal's remit and the basis on which fit is judged are set out in Aims and Scope. Where a manuscript sits at the edge of the remit, the editorial office will give a view before submission.
Choose the article type
The type determines the expected structure and the article processing charge. The seven types the journal publishes are listed below.
Preparing the manuscript
These requirements apply to every article type; the depth expected in each section follows from the type chosen.
Front matter
- Title, author names and affiliations, and the corresponding author's contact details.
- A structured abstract stating objectives, methods, results and conclusions.
- Four to six keywords reflecting the nervous-system or physiological concepts examined.
Main text
- Organize the manuscript as Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion, with subheadings that let a reader navigate it.
- Methods describe protocols, instrumentation, preparations and data processing in enough detail for the work to be assessed and attempted again.
- Results report the findings themselves; interpretation belongs in the Discussion.
Figures, tables and supplementary files
- Each figure and table carries a caption that can be read on its own, and is cited in order in the text.
- Supply figures at a resolution that stays legible at publication size, and supply the underlying values for any summary figure where a reader would need them.
- Supplementary files are listed and cited in the manuscript.
References
- Reference every claim that rests on prior work, and give a DOI where the cited record has one.
- Keep one reference style throughout the manuscript.
Statistics and reporting
- State the statistical tests used, the software, and how the sample size was arrived at.
- Follow the reporting guideline that matches the design — for example PRISMA for systematic reviews and meta-analyses, CONSORT for randomized trials, STROBE for observational studies and ARRIVE for animal research.
Declarations
- Ethics approval for studies involving humans or animals, naming the approving body.
- Interventional clinical trials must be registered in an accepted public trial registry at or before the first participant provides consent for enrollment. The registry name, registration number, and registration date must be reported in the manuscript.
- Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement.
- Funding sources, competing interests and author contributions.
If you request double-blind review
For double-blind review, remove author names, affiliations, acknowledgments, funding details, institution names, and other identifying information from the reviewer manuscript. Provide identifying information separately in the title-page file or submission form.
Article types and charges
The charge is set by type and becomes payable only after acceptance.

Submitting
Send the manuscript by one route. What happens after submission is described in the Editorial Policies.
What happens next
All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
How it is decided
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
Editorial decisions remain independent of fees, services, memberships, or roles.
