Buruli Ulcer Diseases
Buruli ulcers are a neglected tropical disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium ulcerans. These ulcers can cause severe disfiguration, disability and social exclusion. They primarily affect children in rural areas of Africa, South America, and the western pacific. The disease is acquired through contact with contaminated water or soil; however, the exact mode of transmission remains unknown. Early detection and treatment with antibiotics is the most effective way to prevent severe complications. It is estimated that around 10,000 people contract Buruli ulcer each year, making it an important public health concern in many regions.
