Stress Ulcer Prophylaxis
Stress ulcer prophylaxis (SUP) is a health care practice used to prevent the development of stomach or intestinal ulcers for patients who are at a high risk for developing them due to a critical illness or trauma. SUP involves administering medications that reduce the production of stomach acid and improve the protective layer that lines the stomach and intestine. Research has shown that SUP can reduce the occurrence of ulcers in at-risk patients, as well as reduce the related complications associated with these ulcers such as internal bleeding. This type of prophylaxis can tremendously improve the well-being of critically ill and trauma patients, helping them to recover more quickly and effectively. Additionally, by preventing or limiting the development of ulcer complications, SUP can help to save time and money spent on the treatment of these ulcers.
