Stress Ulcers
Stress ulcers, also known as stress-associated gastric ulcers or gastric erosions, are painful sores in the lining of the stomach and duodenum caused by prolonged or excessive levels of stress. They are defined as deep erosions of the gastric mucosal surface and are frequently accompanied by bleeding. Stress ulcers can result from physical or mental/emotional stress, leading to increased acid production, decreased digestive enzyme activity, and an increased risk of infection. These ulcers can cause serious and long-term damage if left untreated, including perforation of the intestine and internal bleeding. Treatment typically involves medications to reduce acid production and promote healing, dietary changes, and lifestyle modifications, such as reducing stress levels. Stress ulcers can usually be avoided by managing stress levels and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
