Mycobacterium Ulcerans Infections

Mycobacterium ulcerans infections, also known as Buruli ulcers, are a neglected tropical disease caused by the mycobacterium ulcerans pathogen. The infection is primarily found in sub-Saharan Africa and is characterized by large, soft, necrotic skin lesions. These lesions are often painful, and if left untreated, can lead to significant scarring, disfigurement, and even limb amputation. Treatment often involves long-term antibiotics, as well as surgery to remove the lesions. In recent years, increased awareness of Mycobacterium ulcerans infections has led to better diagnosis and treatment, helping to reduce the burden of this potentially devastating disease.
