Prevention Pressure Ulcers
Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, are areas of damage to the skin and underlying tissue caused by prolonged pressure that disrupts the blood flow to the area. Prevention of pressure ulcers is essential for individuals who are bed- or wheelchair-bound or who have limited mobility. Pressure ulcers can be prevented through the use of pressure-relieving devices and special mattresses that redistribute pressure, maintaining blood flow and preventing tissue damage. Good nutrition, adequate hydration, and regular skin examination are also important to prevent pressure ulcers. A comprehensive prevention plan should include patient education and awareness of the risk factors, regular skin evaluation, and prompt recognition and treatment of any pressure ulcers that develop. Prevention of pressure ulcers is essential in order to maintain the health and quality of life of individuals with restricted mobility.
