Work the journal is looking for
Regular submissions are accepted throughout the year. The areas below indicate the kinds of contribution the journal publishes; the authoritative boundary is in Aims and Scope.
Mechanistic and experimental work
Studies of excitability, synaptic transmission, circuit function, sensory and motor processing, autonomic and neuroendocrine regulation, and the physiology of the organ systems the nervous system controls.
Theoretical and computational work
Biophysical and network models, systems-level simulation, and analytical or statistical approaches that make a physiological question tractable.
Methods and measurement
Techniques for recording, imaging, stimulating or analyzing nervous-system function, reported with the validation a reader needs to adopt them.
Clinical physiology
Work in which a clinical setting is where the physiology is observed — including altered states, critical illness and disorders of regulation — reported with its methods and its limits.
Reviews that argue a position
Critical syntheses that re-read an existing body of evidence and make an argument, identified as an argument, with the gaps in it stated.
Accepted article types
Original Research Article; Review Article; Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis; Case Report or Case Series; Brief Communication; Editorial or Commentary; Letter to the Editor.
One standard, whichever the type
A submission is assessed on the match between its claim and its evidence. Manuscripts are assessed for scope, scholarly quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, and research integrity.
Before you submit
Three things are worth doing first; each saves a round of correspondence.
Check the fit
Read Aims and Scope. Where a manuscript sits at the edge of the remit, the editorial office will give a view before submission.
Choose the article type
The type sets the expected structure and the article processing charge; both are listed in the Instructions for Authors.
Prepare the declarations
Ethics approval, trial registration where applicable, the data-availability statement, funding and competing interests are required at submission.
Sending the manuscript
Use one route. What happens next is set out in the Editorial Policies.
After submission
All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
The decision
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
Editorial decisions remain independent of fees, services, memberships, or roles.
