Peptic Ulcers
Peptic ulcers are open sores that develop on the inner lining of the stomach and small intestine. They can cause pain, nausea, and other digestive symptoms. Peptic ulcers are usually the result of an infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, although other causes such as long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), smoking, and stress can also play a role. Treatment typically involves a combination of antibiotics and medications to reduce the amount of stomach acid in order to allow the ulcer to heal. Surgery may be necessary in cases where ulcers are persistent or severe. Taking steps to reduce stress, quit smoking, and avoid NSAID use are important parts of a successful treatment plan.
